Softball Leagues

HUB SPORTS BOSTON is the premier slow pitch softball league, playing on over 30 field locations within a 20 mile radius of Boston. The HUB offer multiple leagues for men and women of all skill levels.

SIGN UP OPTIONS

Individual Player

Don’t have a team? New to the area and hoping to meet fun people? Looking for an activity? Whether you have been playing for years or never played before, sign up as an individual and the HUB will find the right team for you.

Small Group

Looking to play but don’t have a full team? Select the small group option, pick a name for your group and invite your friends to join. Each person in the group is responsible for their individual player fee. Then we’ll combine you with other small groups and individuals to create a fun team of your own.

Full Team

Have a squad ready to hit the field? Great, sign up as a full team to save on the league fee and have more control over your roster size.

Join Existing Team

Already part of a team? If your captain paid for a full team and you need to join it, this is the option for you. Joining an existing squad makes you officially part of the roster, completes your player waiver, and allows you access to get up to the minute game day notifications via text and email.

REGISTRATION TYPES

Don’t have a team? New to the area and hoping to meet fun people? Looking for an activity? Whether you have been playing for years or never played before, sign up as an individual and the HUB will find the right team for you.

Small Group

Looking to play but don’t have a full team? Sign up with two or more friends and we’ll combine you with other small groups and individuals to create a fun team of your own.

INDOOR TOURNAMENT RULES

Uniforms – All players are suggested to wear matching jerseys or team shirts.

Home Team – Home team will be determined by a coin toss at the start of the game.

Format – Pool Play into Single Elimination Championship round

Game and Start of play – Regulation games are 40 minutes or 7 innings long.  Extra innings will be played to prevent a tie. If a game goes beyond the time limit the format will switch to a one pitch format with the last batter retired from the previous inning starting the inning at 2nd base.

Pitching – Pitching will be 6′-10′ with a pitching mat. 1-1 count with no fouls through regulation.

Umpires – Umpires are certified ASA umpires. Umpire fees are included. There will be one umpire provided for pool play and 2 umpires for Championship Rounds. Umpires will review the ground rules with the team captains prior to the start of play. Do not harass the umpires. Harassment of the umpires, either physical or verbal may result in an ejection from the game.

Game Balls – Game balls will be provided for the tournament and will be put into play by the umpire. Teams will not receive balls. All indoor play will use Easton Incrediballs.

Players on the field – Each team may have a maximum of 9 fielders and a minimum of 7.

Batting order - Maximum batting order of 15 batters and minimum of 7 batters are required for game to be legal. If your team has more than 15 players present and you wish to play them all they must substitute for players already in the game. Teams will follow the ASA re-entry rules for substituting players.

Players arriving late – Must be placed at the bottom of the order in the order in which they arrived and cannot enter the game while their team is on the field.

Courtesy runners and injury – A batter may ask for courtesy runner BEFORE his time at bat and the umpire will announce it to the opposing team. The batter may not advance beyond first base on a batted ball, except when automatic advancement would be awarded by ground-rule (i.e., automatic double or HR). Once a courtesy runner has been asked for, it is automatic for the rest of the game. A player who has asked for a courtesy runner may not later rescind his request. A replacement runner is the last player to have completed their turn at bat and is seated on the bench. If a player is injured while running to a base it is the umpire’s discretion whether to award a courtesy runner.

Mercy Rule – If one team leads by at least 20 runs after 4 innings or at least 15 runs after 5 innings or at least 10 runs after 6 innings the game will be considered over.

Eligible Bats – The HUB uses the ASA banned bat list as a guide for allowable bats. Eligible bats must bear the ASA seal and not be listed on the banned bat list. Rolled, shaved, loaded or otherwise altered bats are not allowed. If you are found to be using an altered, banned or illegal bat during the game all runs resulting from that time at bat will be removed from the scorebook, the batter will be out and your team will be assessed a 2 run penalty and the player using the bat and the bat itself will be removed from the game. If the offending player leaves your team with only 8 players the game is forfeit. DO NOT USE ILLEGAL BATS. If there is a question about a bat’s eligibility the captain of the questioning team must bring his question to the umpire who will check the bat. The umpire’s decision is final. Bats will be tested at the field.

Count and Fouling out – Each batter will begin his turn at bat with a one ball and one strike count. Batters have no foul to waste.

Mound, Bases and Pitching Arc – The mound be at a distance of 50’ from home plate. The bases will be measured at 65’ and the pitching arc will be 6-10’

Waiver forms – All teams are required to have their teams sign player waiver forms. These forms can be filled out online. This is mandatory to be eligible to play in the tourney.

No bunting, stealing, leading off base, take-out slides or blocking a base. Runners must avoid contact when arriving at a base.

NO ALCOHOL AT OR NEAR THE FIELDS

Rules subject to change prior to start of tournament

1st Annual Coed Champions Cup Soccer Tournament –

The end of the outdoor soccer season is quite visible on the horizon. Another season has come and gone in Boston and there’s no better way to cap it off than playing in the 1st Annual 1st Annual Coed Champions Cup Soccer Tournament! We here at HUB Sports run multiple sports tournaments a year, they make for a long day but sure are a lot of fun. For the administrators it’s up before sunrise and it’s not all said and done until the final teams pack up and leave the field. For the teams and participants, if you leave the tournament with balled up energy, you’re not doing something right. It’s like going to a buffet and leaving hungry, does that even happen? You can often play 50% or more of your typical regular season in a one-day tournament alone. It can be a grueling day but we all do it for the love of the sport.

So what’s this Champions Cup all about? Do you have to be a champion of a HUB league to enter? Certainly not, but it is a catchy name though, right? At the end of the day there will be only one team to earn the rights of the true champion of the Champions Cup. IT’s going to take a lot of stamina and even more determination to be the last one standing in this tournament. We have a great mix of teams entered so far. Some teams have played with us all season long in our outdoor leagues and some teams are completely new to HUB. What’s great about that is that we’re going to have a lot of parity come this Sunday. We’ll see a lot of familiar faces but we’ll also see some new ones and we always love meeting new people at the field! So don’t be shy, get your team on the pitch for the 1st Annual Champions Cup! The action kicks off this upcoming Sunday, November 18th at Danehy Park in Cambridge.

Registration closes on Thursday morning, don’t delay! Click for details: https://goo.gl/Bjnktu

Fall Finale Tournament Teams Preview (Teams 1-10 in no particular order)

  1. Advanced Auto – Captain: Rosario Falzone

Hometown: Lynn, MA

What else needs to be said about these guys? If you don’t know who they are you probably don’t get around much in the softball world. Without actually looking up the data it’s probably safe to say they’ve won or played in about 50% of tournament championships. Will they be there again on Saturday? Probably.

2. BBD – Captain: Alex Carrion

Hometown: Everett, MA

Here we have yet another team lead by some seasoned veterans. Alex and his Bulldogs squad have had some mixed results as of late. Are they a sure thing lock for the next round? Probably not. This tournament is stacked beyond belief, they’re going to need a good pool play draw.

3. Bombers – Captain: Ivan Carrasco

Hometown: Norwood, MA

Ivan and his Bombers had a disappointing slip up in the semis of the Pumpkin Ball Bash. Was he counting his chickens before they hatched? Some may say yes. An 11 run inning was the nail in the coffin that they couldn’t come back from. If the Bombers can eliminate errors and play better defense their offense can carry them later into the afternoon.

4. DC – Captain: Marlon Tauriac

Hometown: Tyngsboro, MA

Most of these guys play their league ball in Lawrence. So what’s that tell us? Not too much other than they’re on the NH border. They played in the Fall Finale last year as Hayes Tavern. They’re looking to make a name for themselves on Saturday that’s for sure.

5. Deadskunks – Captain: David Campbell

Hometown: Falmouth, MA

These guys hail from the shark feeding grounds of Cape Cod. We’ve heard they also play a little softball down there on the Cape so we’re sure these guys are prepared for battle. We have not seen them participate in a HUB tourney yet but they aren’t making the drive up to Dedham just to get some cuts in.

6. Easton Nomads – Captain: Chris Tracy

Hometown: Easton, MA

Watch out for this squad. They certainly turned some heads last year in the Fall Finale. They made their first appearance in a HUB tourney last year and they’re back looking to improve upon last year’s results. They’ll be packing quite a punch after plucking a few guys from a handful of teams in the Easton Men’s Softball League.

7. Framingham Pirates – Captain: Carlos Rivera

Hometown: Natick, MA

Most of these guys hail from the Framingham area hence the team name. Hopefully their season went a little better than their major league counterparts in Pittsburgh. We did see them in the Early Bird tournament last Spring but that seems like ages ago at this point. New year new squad, let’s see what they can do.

8. Ghosts of Faxon Park – Captain: Lee Qualtieri

Hometown: Quincy, MA

These guys always make sure they jump into the year end Fall Finale. Last year they ended up going 1-2 in pool play and weren’t able to advance into bracket play. Their accolades include 2015 and recent 2018 Faxon Park League champions. After some recent success they should be feeling confident they can make some noise on Saturday.

9. GnD – Captain: John Morin

Hometown: Methuen, MA

Last year John entered the tournament as the Yahd Dawgs, they didn’t fair too well but that doesn’t mean much for 2018. These guys are fresh off a championship victory in the Pelham men’s league, so they must be feeling confident. How confident? Hopefully not too confident, the competition is extra fierce this year.

10. Golden Vets – Captain: Corey Simone

Hometown: Peabody, MA

All these guys play in the Peabody men’s softball league. That doesn’t tell is too much so we’ll have to wait until they show up on Saturday. Not a bad drive down 95 for them on Saturday, maybe this year’s sleeper team? We’ll have to wait until pool play begins to tell.

Pumpkin Ball Bash Tournament Teams Preview (Teams 9-16 in no particular order)

9. Irish – Captain: Brendan Clooney

Hometown: Dorchester, MA

Formerly known as the Boston Pirates, a core of the guys on the Irish are continuing the legacy. The Pirates were our champions in 2015 but have since taken a bit of a hiatus from the tourney scene. Those familiar faces will be back on the diamond come game time tomorrow, do they still have what it takes?

10. Mill City Ghosts – Captain: Nick Bouras

Hometown: Lowell, MA

From captain Nick Bouras: “ Halloween is around the corner and the Ghosts are out to play! Defense is solid and the bats are swinging. Don’t be scared by the yelling, and don’t try to yell back…most of the team can’t hear you anyway! Atomic hands will be flying just as far as the balls they hit. Be ready for the challenge that Mill City Ghosts bring, because they’re looking to bank their first championship.

11. New Kehds on the Block – Captain: Kelly Conlin

Hometown: Watertown, MA

From captain Kelly Conlin: Casey and Kelly met playing in Dedham with Parente last fall and have played on over 5 teams together this year. If you haven’t seen their SS to 2B defensive outs you’re missing out. The duo picked up Ian in Dedham this spring who is best known for epic comebacks including an impressive walk off homer to get a W when his team came back from a 17 run deficit. Casey coached his Cambridge squad to a HUB trophy and Kelly was part of an Ebersol champs team. The three played in Watertown together coached by Kelly and they definitely got the sponsor bar perfect attendance trophy. This team is the best of the best from all of their spring and summer squads.

12. No Mercy – Captain: Eric Gaalaas

Hometown: Bedford, MA

This crew is a staple in the HUB weeknight standard softball league. Over the last 6-7 years they have amassed an impressive 11 yes 11 league championships. Now if we do the math that doesn’t mean a clean sweep every single season, they have had their slip ups. Coming in as another one of the odds on favorites they will have to put all the pieces together to make it to the ship on Saturday night.

13. Percival Brewing Cleared Hot – Captain: Loreena Miceli

Hometown: Bridgewater, MA

This team will be trying their luck for the first time in a HUB tourney. Now don’t let that fool you, they aren’t a bunch of rookies. They often participate in tournaments so the experience is there. The roster shows a mix of young and shall we say more seasoned players. They’ll be making one of the further drives to get to the fields on Saturday coming from Bridgewater, and they aren’t making the drive just to get some swings in.

14. Squirtle Squad – Captain: Louis Croce

Hometown: Allston, MA

This team is an absolute buzz saw in the Weeknights in JP League. In fact, they’ve racked up the last 4 league championships in JP. There’s something to be said about a team that dominates that much in league play. They have it all figured out when it comes to this league. Believe it or not things get a lot more intense in tournament ball. Do they have the consistency to run the table in pool play? Do not take this team lightly.

15. SSPR – Captain: Jane Carroll

Hometown: Duxbury, MA

This team is also another rookie to the HUB tournament scene. They hail mostly from the South Shore and play in a variety of different leagues together. They’re joining forces tomorrow to see what if they can pull off some upsets and turn some heads. They will have to put up a lot of runs on the board in addition to making little to no mistakes if they have hopes of advancing on. They’ll certainly have their work cut out for them tomorrow, let’s see if they have what it takes.

16. The Free Agents – Captain: Paul Schoenfelder

Hometown: Riverside, RI

Paul is quite the gamer and he brings a new team into Saturday with one goal in mind, get that first tournament W! We count Paul on 12 rosters over the last 2 calendar years, that’s a lot of softball. He plays most of his ball in Cambridge but his team draws from all over Greater Boston. We’re ready to see these guys pick up a win, but surely no one else is interested in helping them towards that! We’ll see how it all shakes up on Saturday!

Pumpkin Ball Bash Tournament Teams Preview (Teams 1-8 in no particular order)

  1. Balls on the Rocks – Captain: Alyssa Dolson

Hometown: Northbridge, MA

New to the HUB tournament scene we have a squad that hails from mostly south of Worcester in the Northbridge area. They like to stay sharp throughout the year and play in multiple tournaments together. Will they surprise some teams on Saturday, they sure have the experience necessary.

  1. Balls Out – Captain: Steve Matteo

Hometown: Wilmington, MA

Making at least their 3rd appearance in a coed HUB tournament this team has had some mixed results. Most recently they were able to scratch and claw their way to a Spring Fling Silver Division Championship back in April. They’ll have to do a better job of taking care of business in pool play to advance themselves to afternoon bracket play.

  1. Bearded Ladies – Captain: Ed Pietras

Hometown: Watertown, MA

This team has not played in a HUB tournament before but they have been playing league ball with us all year long. They started with indoor in Framingham and have also notched a couple Metro North League seasons in their belt. This past season they finished 6-4 and were bounced out in the semifinals. They’re hoping for good pool placement to be able to advance on.

  1. Bombers – Captain: Ivan Carrasco

Hometown: Norwood, MA

If you play in softball tournaments in Mass, you know the Bombers. If you don’t know the Bombers then you will come Saturday. Ivan enters tournaments not only so he can mash the ball as hard as possible but with another goal in mind too, win at all costs. If the Bombers can keep a level head and play team softball throughout pool play there’s no reason why we shouldn’t see them in the afternoon bracket play.

  1. Cool Cat Sportswear -Captain: Michael Goldstein

Hometown: Randolph, MA

Coming in as a team with one of the more seasoned rosters we’ll have to wait and see if these guys have the gas in the tank to make a run on Saturday. Sure they have the experience necessary but when it comes to tournament ball, one bad inning could mean you’re packing up early and heading home after pool play. They’ll have to play slow meticulous softball to advance to bracket play.

  1. Dollar Drafts – Captain: Doug Horton

Hometown: Bedford, MA

The Dollar Draft squad have been playing our tournaments for years now. Their results have been pretty mixed though. If memory serves us correct they’ve advanced one or two times from pool play to bracket play. However, we have never seen them make it as far as the semis or finals. Do they have the talent? Probably. We’ll see how it shakes out on Saturday.

  1. Hancock Tavern – Captain: Nikki Cignarella

Hometown: Quincy, MA

Here we have another staple in the HUB tournaments. This squad is also coming in as one of the odds-on favorites to win the tourney on Saturday. They captured a HUB league championship back in the summer in one of our Southie leagues so they’re no strangers to success. Their keys to victory on Saturday will be solid pitching and no crooked numbers, if that happens their offense should take care of business.

  1. Hometown Homies – Captain: Jim Matthews

Hometown: North Andover, MA

This squad hails mostly from north of Boston. While we have not seen them play in a HUB tournament before, they’ve played plenty of league ball this season. They’ve been playing in the Sunday standard league this season and they’ve amassed mostly an above .500 record against some good competition. Do they have the stamina and tenacity to take it home on Saturday? This might be a sleeper team.

NUMBER OF PLAYERS 7 v 7 Games – The total number of players on the field at once include: 6 field players and a goalkeeper. For coed 2 of the players must be female. The minimum number of rostered players required to start a game is 4 (3 field players and a goalie of which 1 player is a female). A game is terminated once it has started if a team has fewer than 5 players due to injury or penalties. If you have only 1 female show up you must play short. A male cannot take the place of the missing female to field 7 players.

ROSTERS – Team rosters must be finalized before the first game of the tournament. Players must be added to the team’s roster before the first game, and only players who sign a player waiver form are considered rostered. There is no maximum to the number of players you can put on your roster, but the minimums above must be met. Players may not be rostered on two teams in the same tournament.

EQUIPMENT:

MANDATORY – Shin guards fully covered by socks, uniform shirt, shorts, footwear.

EXCLUDED – Hats, hard cast (even if padded), braces of any kind that are deemed dangerous by the referee and any other equipment that the referee deems dangerous. If a player  is wearing a hard knee brace, they must wrap any buckles or sharp edges. Players will not be allowed on the field with any equipment the referee deems dangerous. THE FINAL DECISION AS TO WHETHER SOMETHING IS DANGEROUS OR NOT LIES STRICTLY WITH THE REFEREE.

DURATION OF THE GAME:

GAME TIMING – During the regular season games will consist of two (2) 22-minute “RUNNING TIME” periods. The clock will stop only if, in the opinion of the referee, moving an injured player while waiting for medical attention would be hazardous to the injured player. Get the injured player off the field as quickly and safely as possible, as the clock is ticking. Tournaments will feature one (1) forty (40) minute running half.

EXTRA TIME – For the tournament finals there will be a 5 minute golden goal period, followed by penalty kicks will be a round of 5 players with at least 2 females shooting. For all pool play and semi-final games there will only be penalty kicks. If there is still a tie after the 5 kicks, there will be a one on one situation until the tie is broken. Any player on the team can take the kicks. Each team member must shoot once before a player can shoot again.

START OF PLAY – The kick off is a direct free kick and may be played in any direction.

FOULS AND MISCONDUCT:

  1. A) DIRECT FREE KICKS – governed by FIFA Laws of the Game with the following additions:
  2. Sliding of any kind from players or goalkeepers outside the penalty area is not allowed.. Goalkeepers may slide tackle as long as they are doing so within their penalty area and not in a dangerous manner. Players may not:
  1. Slide
  2. Tackle from behind
  3. Check an opponent against the boards (Revere)
  4. Slide to play the ball in the penalty area whether or not offensively or defensively. If defensively, a penalty kick will be awarded.
  1. B) INDIRECT FREE KICKS – governed by FIFA Laws of the Game.

Any indirect kick taken by the attacking team for a foul inside the penalty area, the ball will be placed at the top of the penalty area in the center. No playing the ball while on the ground.

  1. C) BLUE, YELLOW & RED CARDS – All cards are a time served penalty. The time served begins when the players exit the field and the ball is put back into play, NOT when the penalty was called. Get off the field quickly, the game clock is still ticking (exception: the ref stops the game clock for red cards)

BLUE CARD = 2-MINUTE PENALTY – The player receiving this card will serve a 2-minute penalty. If the goalkeeper receives a 2-minute penalty another player may serve the penalty. The player penalized is released in the following manner: 1) the 2 minutes have been served or 2) the non-penalized team scores a goal before the 2 minutes have expired. (Similar to hockey). MANDATORY 2-MINUTE PENALTIES – Any foul initiated from behind the fouled player deemed dangerous by the referee.

YELLOW CARD = 5-MINUTE PENALTY – If a player receives a yellow card then that player MUST serve the full 5 minutes no matter how many goals are scored by the non-penalized team. If the goalkeeper receives a yellow card then he must serve the 5 minutes and a replacement keeper will enter the playing area and a field player will be removed.

RED CARD AND 5-MINUTE PENALTY – Ref stops the game clock, the player who was issued the red card has 2 minutes to leave the building (not just leave the field) before the game is restarted. If the player refuses to leave, the game is declared a forfeit for the penalized team. The player penalized may not participate in the next scheduled game. A member of the penalized team will serve the 5-minute time penalty in their place once the game clock is restarted.

NUMBER OF PLAYERS – A team may not have less than 4 players on the playing area while penalties are being served. If a team has more than 2 players serving penalties only the first 2 penalties are running. As one penalty is over, then the 3rd begins and then the 4th begins, etc.

OTHER PROVISIONS

DISTANCE FROM KICKS – All defending players must be at least 3 yards from the ball.

DOUBLE TOUCH – The player taking the free kick cannot be the first person to touch the ball after the ball has been kicked. Another player (not the boards) must touch the ball before the player can kick the ball again.

SUBSTITUTIONS – Substitutions may be made at anytime while the game is in process provided that the player being substituted is within 3 yards of the team door before the substitute enters the playing area. If this distance is not met, the referee may issue a 2-minute bench penalty for too many players on the court. Goal keepers may be substituted either by 1) on the fly as above 2) after a goal is scored before the kick off 3) at a stoppage in play when the keeper’s team is in position of the ball and 4) when play is stopped for an injury. In all cases, the goalie must notify the referee when substituting with another player.

GOAL KICKS/KEEPER THROWS – May be taken from anywhere within the penalty area. The ball may not travel beyond the halfway line in the air. The penalty is an indirect free kick from the half way line for the attacking team.

PENALTY KICKS – Penalty kicks are to be taken from the top of the penalty area in the center. All players, other than the one taking the kick, must remain behind the mid line until the kick is taken.

GOALKEEPER RESTRICTIONS – Once keeper is in possession of the ball, the keeper may throw the ball back into play. Keeper’s may not punt or drop kick the ball into play. Penalty for kicking the ball will be an indirect free kick from the top of the penalty area. The keeper may release the ball on the ground and play it as a field player with the same restrictions as a field player. The keeper may not go outside the penalty area and dribble the ball back into to the penalty area and pick the ball up. Keepers will be restricted to the pass back rule and must release the ball within 6 seconds.

PLAYER LINE RESTRICTIONS – There are no line restrictions except those for goalkeepers as mentioned.

NO OFFSIDES

NO BICYCLE KICKS!! – too dangerous for everyone around you, and the ground is concrete under the turf. Do not do it.

INTENTIONAL DELAY OF GAME – The referee will warn a team for the first intentional delay of game. After the first warning, any reoccurrence will result in a 2-minute penalty

TIEBREAKERS – If teams are tied in the standings after pool play is completed, tiebreakers are as follows:

  1. Head to head record
  2. Fewest goals allowed among tied teams
