Men’s Early Bird Special Tournament Teams Preview (Teams #1-12)

  1. …And Justice For All – Captain: Eric Maus

Hometown: Methuen, MA

Eric has played plenty of HUB ball and his team appears to be a mix and match of familiar faces. So, they likely know what they’re up against on Sunday. They certainly have some tough matchups in store for them, can they come up with some clutch hits to advance? We shall see.

  1. BBD – Captain: Alex Carrion

Hometown: Everett, MA

The squad formerly known as the Bulldogs have been staying pretty fresh this winter. Alex has been quite a familiar face at the HUB indoor tourneys, so him and the team don’t have a lot of rust to knock off. Watch out for them to come out of the gate hot, they’ll need to stay hot all day to be one of the lucky teams to advance.

  1. BNB – Captain: Ronen Levy

Hometown: Sharon, MA

Watch out for this squad right here. Ronen, like Alex, has been quite the regular at Union Point for the indoor tourneys. In fact, he’s entered 6 different teams and been crowned champion twice. Ronen brings the passion to the field unmatched by most. This guy loves softball, you’ll likely see him on the field 6 days a week once the outdoor season is fully underway. Does passion equal success? Sometimes yes but it’ll take a little skill thrown in there too.

  1. Bombers – Captain: Ivan Carrasco

Hometown: Norwood, MA

If you don’t know Ivan by now you probably haven’t played much softball in Boston. Often times you may hear him before you see him. The infamous grunt is just unmistakable. All that aside can these guys sack up and finally win a HUB tourney title?! They’re always in the running to advance but they’ve been some crooked innings end up costing them in the end. Only time will tell on Sunday.

  1. Dream Team – Captain: Robert Modoono

Hometown: Wakefield, MA

We typically see this squad for a couple HUB tourneys every year. Their success has been a bit of a mixed bag but they have the talent there to advance out of pool play. They’re coming off some recent success in the Holiday Classic indoor tournament where they ended up losing in extra innings of the championship game. They’ll be a favorite for the WC in our eyes.

  1. Game of Throws – Captain: Kris Monson

Hometown: Arlington, MA

The man, the myth, the legend – Kris Monson. He’s a staple in the Boston softball world. In fact, he’s coming off a double MLB season last year….roughly 350 games, yikes! He’s a hell of a gamer that’s for sure. Is his team the 2nd coming of the 2018 Red Sox? No. But these guys sure have some heart and they sure do have some fun out there too. It’s all for the love of the game!

  1. Greenwarden – Captain: Paul Grazia

Hometown: South Portland, ME

Hailing from Maine these guys have the furthest drive of the morning to get into softball mode. It’ll be about a 3-hour commute for this squad so you better believe they’ll mean business on Sunday. We have not seen this team play with us yet in a tourney, so their skill is a little TBD, let’s see what they’re made of.

  1. No Glove No Love – Captain: Anthony Villasuso

Hometown: Boston, MA

Anthony and his team are another team that is no stranger to HUB softball. They were all over the fields last year, and this year they’ll be in the Thursdays on the Common league for the spring. Looks like they’re using this tourney as a little warm-up for the season. They might be a sleeper team to advance but the odds are certainly stacked against them.

  1. Rozzie Hoods – Captain: Karsten Krumbiegel

Hometown: Roslindale, MA

Karsten and his Rozzie Hoods crew have certainly caught the softball fever. We sure saw a lot of them in outdoor ball last year and expect more of the same from this group of gamers. They’ve struggled a bit in tournament ball but they have the experience and innings under their belt to make a little bit of noise on Sunday. Possible wild card sleeper?

  1. SouthSide Tavern – Captain: John Manning

Hometown: John Manning

These guys are coming in as a sure-fire tournament favorite. They have a few HUB tourney championships under their belt and they’re looking to add to that total to start the season off. They have the power, they have the pitching and they have the D to compete with any and all teams in the area. We’ll look for them to be in the semis come Sunday afternoon.

  1. White Fuel – Captain: Ryan Tuttle

Hometown: Waltham, MA

Here we have another tournament powerhouse. These guys won the tourney last year and they’re coming in with a free bid this year. With no money on the line will they bring all of the A squad to repeat this bad boy? We expect them to have the big guns there but let’s not give them the title yet, there are plenty of teams hungry to knock them off.

  1. Wild Turkeys – Captain: Dante Carnevale

Hometown: Norfolk, MA

Dante and the guys are yet another team that loves them some HUB softball. These guys go by Wild Card for league play but they’ve evolved into the Wild Turkeys for tournaments. We recently saw them in the President’s Day Invitational this winter where they went 2-1 in pool play but got bounced out in the quarterfinals. They could surprise some people on Sunday but they’ll need a little luck thrown in there too to advance.

COED INDOOR TOURNAMENT RULES

Uniforms – All players are suggested to wear matching jerseys or team shirts.

Home Team – Home team will be determined by a coin toss at the start of the game.

Format – Pool Play into Single Elimination Championship round

Game and Start of play – Regulation games are 40 minutes or 7 innings long.  Extra innings will be played to prevent a tie. If a game goes beyond the time limit the format will switch to a one pitch format with the last batter retired from the previous inning starting the inning at 2nd base.

Pitching – Pitching will be 6′-1o’ with a pitching mat. 1-1 count with no fouls through regulation. A strike plate will be used.

Umpires – Umpires are certified ASA umpires. Umpire fees are included. There will be one umpire provided for pool play and 2 umpires for the Championship Game. Umpires will review the ground rules with the team captains prior to the start of play. Do not harass the umpires. Harassment of the umpires, either physical or verbal may result in an ejection from the game.

Game Balls – Game balls will be provided for the tournament and will be put into play by the umpire. Teams will not receive balls. All indoor play will use Easton Incrediballs.

Players on the field – Each team may have a maximum of 9 fielders and a minimum of 7, 2 of which must be female. Teams may not bring in an additional infielder when a female batter is at bat.

Batting order Coed – Teams may bat 10 players. 9 in the field and one Extra Hitter (EH). There must be at least 2 females in the batting order. A team may not bat more than 2 males in a row (MMFMMFMMM), until both women have batted. Once the mandatory number of women have batted a team is allowed to bat the remaining men up to a maximum of 4 in a row if your EH is male (except when the batting order is turning over.)

Extra Hitters – Teams are allowed to add one extra hitter for a total of 10 batters. Teams may continue to bat extra hitters but must alternate between male and female after the first extra hitter. Therefore the 11th batter, or second extra hitter, must be female and you can only add a 12th male batter or third extra hitter,  if you add a 13th female batter and so on.

Penalty for missing women – Both female spots must appear in the order from the start of the game. If less than 2 women are present at the start of the game then a “ghost out” will be accessed each time a missing woman’s spot is reached in the order. If less than 2 women are present prior to the first pitch of the top of the third inning then a 2 run penalty will be awarded to the opponent for each woman under 3. To avoid penalty, 2 women must be at the field by the top of the third inning. At least 1 woman is required to play the game. Their spots in the field cannot be filled with men.

Walk to a male batter with a female batting next – When a male batter is walked and a female spot (whether present or not) follows in the batting order, the male batter automatically advances to 2nd base. Base runners advance only to the base they are forced to move to (i.e. a sole runner on second would only move to third if forced by the approaching walked batter). The female batter will bat unless there are 2 outs in which case the female batter will have the option to take first base if desired.

Players arriving late – Must be placed at the bottom of the order in the order in which they arrived and cannot enter the game while their team is on the field.

Courtesy runners and injury – A batter may ask for courtesy runner BEFORE his time at bat and the umpire will announce it to the opposing team. The batter may not advance beyond first base on a batted ball, except when automatic advancement would be awarded by ground-rule (i.e., automatic double or HR). Once a courtesy runner has been asked for, it is automatic for the rest of the game. A player who has asked for a courtesy runner may not later rescind his request. A replacement runner is the last player to have completed their turn at bat and is seated on the bench. If a player is injured while running to a base it is the umpire’s discretion whether to award a courtesy runner.

Mercy Rule – If one team leads by at least 20 runs after 4 innings or at least 15 runs after 5 innings or at least 10 runs after 6 innings the game will be considered over.

Eligible Bats – The HUB uses the ASA banned bat list as a guide for allowable bats. Eligible bats must bear the ASA seal and not be listed on the banned bat list. Rolled, shaved, loaded or otherwise altered bats are not allowed. If you are found to be using an altered, banned or illegal bat during the game all runs resulting from that time at bat will be removed from the scorebook, the batter will be out and your team will be assessed a 2 run penalty and the player using the bat and the bat itself will be removed from the game. If the offending player leaves your team with only 8 players the game is forfeit. DO NOT USE ILLEGAL BATS. If there is a question about a bat’s eligibility the captain of the questioning team must bring his question to the umpire who will check the bat. The umpire’s decision is final.

Count and Fouling out – Each batter will begin his turn at bat with a one ball and one strike count. Batters have no foul to waste.

Mound, Bases and Pitching Arc – The mound be at a distance of 50’ from home plate. The bases will be measured at 65’ and the pitching arc will be 6-10’

Waiver forms – All teams are required to have their teams sign player waiver forms. These forms can be filled out online. This is mandatory to be eligible to play in the tourney.

No bunting, stealing, leading off base, take-out slides or blocking a base. Runners must avoid contact when arriving at a base.

NO ALCOHOL AT OR NEAR THE FIELDS

Rules subject to change prior to start of tournament

SIGN UP OPTIONS

  • Individual Player

Don’t have a team? New to the area and hoping to meet fun people? Looking for an activity? Whether you have been playing for years or never played before, sign up as an individual and the HUB will find the right team for you.

  • Small Group

Looking to play but don’t have a full team? Select the small group option, pick a name for your group and invite your friends to join. Each person in the group is responsible for their individual player fee. Then we’ll combine you with other small groups and individuals to create a fun team of your own.

  • Full Team

Have a squad ready to hit the field? Great, sign up as a full team to save on the league fee and have more control over your roster size.

INDOOR TOURNAMENT RULES

Uniforms – All players are suggested to wear matching jerseys or team shirts.

Home Team – Home team will be determined by a coin toss at the start of the game.

Format – Pool Play into Single Elimination Championship round

Game and Start of play – Regulation games are 40 minutes or 7 innings long.  Extra innings will be played to prevent a tie. If a game goes beyond the time limit the format will switch to a one pitch format with the last batter retired from the previous inning starting the inning at 2nd base.

Pitching – Pitching will be 6′-10′ with a pitching mat. 1-1 count with no fouls through regulation.

Umpires – Umpires are certified ASA umpires. Umpire fees are included. There will be one umpire provided for pool play and 2 umpires for Championship Rounds.

Players on the field – Each team may have a maximum of 9 fielders and a minimum of 7.

Coed Batting Order – Teams must bat at least 2 female batters. Teams may not bat more than 3 male batters in a row. Teams may add up to 2 male EH’s for a total batting order of 11. If a team wishes to bat more than 11 the next batter (12) must be female and then a team may add 2 more male EH’s

Men’s Batting Order - Batting order is unlimited but minimum of 7 batters are required for game to be legal.

A replacement runner is the last player of the same gender to have completed their turn at bat and is seated on the bench. If a player is injured while running to a base it is the umpire’s discretion whether to award a courtesy runner.

Mercy Rule – If one team leads by at least 20 runs after 4 innings or at least 15 runs after 5 innings or at least 10 runs after 6 innings the game will be considered over.

Eligible Bats – Any association bats are legal for play

1st Annual Coed Champions Cup Soccer Tournament –

The end of the outdoor soccer season is quite visible on the horizon. Another season has come and gone in Boston and there’s no better way to cap it off than playing in the 1st Annual 1st Annual Coed Champions Cup Soccer Tournament! We here at HUB Sports run multiple sports tournaments a year, they make for a long day but sure are a lot of fun. For the administrators it’s up before sunrise and it’s not all said and done until the final teams pack up and leave the field. For the teams and participants, if you leave the tournament with balled up energy, you’re not doing something right. It’s like going to a buffet and leaving hungry, does that even happen? You can often play 50% or more of your typical regular season in a one-day tournament alone. It can be a grueling day but we all do it for the love of the sport.

So what’s this Champions Cup all about? Do you have to be a champion of a HUB league to enter? Certainly not, but it is a catchy name though, right? At the end of the day there will be only one team to earn the rights of the true champion of the Champions Cup. IT’s going to take a lot of stamina and even more determination to be the last one standing in this tournament. We have a great mix of teams entered so far. Some teams have played with us all season long in our outdoor leagues and some teams are completely new to HUB. What’s great about that is that we’re going to have a lot of parity come this Sunday. We’ll see a lot of familiar faces but we’ll also see some new ones and we always love meeting new people at the field! So don’t be shy, get your team on the pitch for the 1st Annual Champions Cup! The action kicks off this upcoming Sunday, November 18th at Danehy Park in Cambridge.

Registration closes on Thursday morning, don’t delay! Click for details: https://goo.gl/Bjnktu

Fall Finale Tournament Teams Preview (Teams 1-10 in no particular order)

  1. Advanced Auto – Captain: Rosario Falzone

Hometown: Lynn, MA

What else needs to be said about these guys? If you don’t know who they are you probably don’t get around much in the softball world. Without actually looking up the data it’s probably safe to say they’ve won or played in about 50% of tournament championships. Will they be there again on Saturday? Probably.

2. BBD – Captain: Alex Carrion

Hometown: Everett, MA

Here we have yet another team lead by some seasoned veterans. Alex and his Bulldogs squad have had some mixed results as of late. Are they a sure thing lock for the next round? Probably not. This tournament is stacked beyond belief, they’re going to need a good pool play draw.

3. Bombers – Captain: Ivan Carrasco

Hometown: Norwood, MA

Ivan and his Bombers had a disappointing slip up in the semis of the Pumpkin Ball Bash. Was he counting his chickens before they hatched? Some may say yes. An 11 run inning was the nail in the coffin that they couldn’t come back from. If the Bombers can eliminate errors and play better defense their offense can carry them later into the afternoon.

4. DC – Captain: Marlon Tauriac

Hometown: Tyngsboro, MA

Most of these guys play their league ball in Lawrence. So what’s that tell us? Not too much other than they’re on the NH border. They played in the Fall Finale last year as Hayes Tavern. They’re looking to make a name for themselves on Saturday that’s for sure.

5. Deadskunks – Captain: David Campbell

Hometown: Falmouth, MA

These guys hail from the shark feeding grounds of Cape Cod. We’ve heard they also play a little softball down there on the Cape so we’re sure these guys are prepared for battle. We have not seen them participate in a HUB tourney yet but they aren’t making the drive up to Dedham just to get some cuts in.

6. Easton Nomads – Captain: Chris Tracy

Hometown: Easton, MA

Watch out for this squad. They certainly turned some heads last year in the Fall Finale. They made their first appearance in a HUB tourney last year and they’re back looking to improve upon last year’s results. They’ll be packing quite a punch after plucking a few guys from a handful of teams in the Easton Men’s Softball League.

7. Framingham Pirates – Captain: Carlos Rivera

Hometown: Natick, MA

Most of these guys hail from the Framingham area hence the team name. Hopefully their season went a little better than their major league counterparts in Pittsburgh. We did see them in the Early Bird tournament last Spring but that seems like ages ago at this point. New year new squad, let’s see what they can do.

8. Ghosts of Faxon Park – Captain: Lee Qualtieri

Hometown: Quincy, MA

These guys always make sure they jump into the year end Fall Finale. Last year they ended up going 1-2 in pool play and weren’t able to advance into bracket play. Their accolades include 2015 and recent 2018 Faxon Park League champions. After some recent success they should be feeling confident they can make some noise on Saturday.

9. GnD – Captain: John Morin

Hometown: Methuen, MA

Last year John entered the tournament as the Yahd Dawgs, they didn’t fair too well but that doesn’t mean much for 2018. These guys are fresh off a championship victory in the Pelham men’s league, so they must be feeling confident. How confident? Hopefully not too confident, the competition is extra fierce this year.

10. Golden Vets – Captain: Corey Simone

Hometown: Peabody, MA

All these guys play in the Peabody men’s softball league. That doesn’t tell is too much so we’ll have to wait until they show up on Saturday. Not a bad drive down 95 for them on Saturday, maybe this year’s sleeper team? We’ll have to wait until pool play begins to tell.

Pumpkin Ball Bash Tournament Teams Preview (Teams 9-16 in no particular order)

9. Irish – Captain: Brendan Clooney

Hometown: Dorchester, MA

Formerly known as the Boston Pirates, a core of the guys on the Irish are continuing the legacy. The Pirates were our champions in 2015 but have since taken a bit of a hiatus from the tourney scene. Those familiar faces will be back on the diamond come game time tomorrow, do they still have what it takes?

10. Mill City Ghosts – Captain: Nick Bouras

Hometown: Lowell, MA

From captain Nick Bouras: “ Halloween is around the corner and the Ghosts are out to play! Defense is solid and the bats are swinging. Don’t be scared by the yelling, and don’t try to yell back…most of the team can’t hear you anyway! Atomic hands will be flying just as far as the balls they hit. Be ready for the challenge that Mill City Ghosts bring, because they’re looking to bank their first championship.

11. New Kehds on the Block – Captain: Kelly Conlin

Hometown: Watertown, MA

From captain Kelly Conlin: Casey and Kelly met playing in Dedham with Parente last fall and have played on over 5 teams together this year. If you haven’t seen their SS to 2B defensive outs you’re missing out. The duo picked up Ian in Dedham this spring who is best known for epic comebacks including an impressive walk off homer to get a W when his team came back from a 17 run deficit. Casey coached his Cambridge squad to a HUB trophy and Kelly was part of an Ebersol champs team. The three played in Watertown together coached by Kelly and they definitely got the sponsor bar perfect attendance trophy. This team is the best of the best from all of their spring and summer squads.

12. No Mercy – Captain: Eric Gaalaas

Hometown: Bedford, MA

This crew is a staple in the HUB weeknight standard softball league. Over the last 6-7 years they have amassed an impressive 11 yes 11 league championships. Now if we do the math that doesn’t mean a clean sweep every single season, they have had their slip ups. Coming in as another one of the odds on favorites they will have to put all the pieces together to make it to the ship on Saturday night.

13. Percival Brewing Cleared Hot – Captain: Loreena Miceli

Hometown: Bridgewater, MA

This team will be trying their luck for the first time in a HUB tourney. Now don’t let that fool you, they aren’t a bunch of rookies. They often participate in tournaments so the experience is there. The roster shows a mix of young and shall we say more seasoned players. They’ll be making one of the further drives to get to the fields on Saturday coming from Bridgewater, and they aren’t making the drive just to get some swings in.

14. Squirtle Squad – Captain: Louis Croce

Hometown: Allston, MA

This team is an absolute buzz saw in the Weeknights in JP League. In fact, they’ve racked up the last 4 league championships in JP. There’s something to be said about a team that dominates that much in league play. They have it all figured out when it comes to this league. Believe it or not things get a lot more intense in tournament ball. Do they have the consistency to run the table in pool play? Do not take this team lightly.

15. SSPR – Captain: Jane Carroll

Hometown: Duxbury, MA

This team is also another rookie to the HUB tournament scene. They hail mostly from the South Shore and play in a variety of different leagues together. They’re joining forces tomorrow to see what if they can pull off some upsets and turn some heads. They will have to put up a lot of runs on the board in addition to making little to no mistakes if they have hopes of advancing on. They’ll certainly have their work cut out for them tomorrow, let’s see if they have what it takes.

16. The Free Agents – Captain: Paul Schoenfelder

Hometown: Riverside, RI

Paul is quite the gamer and he brings a new team into Saturday with one goal in mind, get that first tournament W! We count Paul on 12 rosters over the last 2 calendar years, that’s a lot of softball. He plays most of his ball in Cambridge but his team draws from all over Greater Boston. We’re ready to see these guys pick up a win, but surely no one else is interested in helping them towards that! We’ll see how it all shakes up on Saturday!
